ART

 

ArtI                    Grades 9 through 12         321100                        1 Credit

     This class introduces basic information on drawing materials, elements, and techniques.  These are then applied to the study of still life, landscape, portraiture and animal drawing.  The following media will be used: charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and conte' crayon.

 

Art II                  Grades 10 through 12       321200                        1 Credit

     This class offers a wide variety of art experiences based upon the fundamental elements and principles of art.  Example elements are color, space, shape, line, value, and texture.  Students will learn how to use colored pencils, chalk, pastel, tempera, and acrylic paint.

 

Art III-IV            Grades 11 & 12                 321300;321400           1 Credit

     This class is designed to acquaint the students with all aspects of art learning.  Studio experiences are combined with aesthetics, art criticism, and art history.  Studio work in acrylic and watercolor painting, batik, tie-dye, paper-machete, weaving, tole painting, etc...  Students must supply some of the materials.  Pre-requisite:  General Art I and General Art II.  Students should have attained a B or better in General Art I and General Art II.

 

MUSIC

 

Band                Grades 7 through 12            270600                        1 Credit

      Winds and Percussion provides opportunities for students in grades 7-12 to participate in marching, concert, ad jazz ensemble.  Musical skills such as technique, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, harmony, form, tone, and active listening will be developed.  Involvement in the pep band, jazz ensemble, and percussion ensemble require enrollment in this class (Except in special circumstances which will be reviewed and determined by the director).  All performances are mandatory.

 

Chorus             Grades 9 through 12            370600                        1 Credit

     The choral student will expand a broad base of singing skills through various styles of choral compositions.  Students will use advanced notation and technical skills to express musicianship through a variety of singing styles as related to the music filed.  All performances are mandatory.

 

Music Appreciation/History          Grades 9 through 12        374600     1 Credit

     An opportunity for non-performing students to examine the basic elements of music while listening to and analyzing music of many genres and styles.

 

Jazz Ensemble Grades 9 through 12            374100                        1 Credit

     The Jazz Ensemble is an outreach to those advanced students who wish to refine their skills in a jazz idiom.  Blues, pop, funk, swing, Be-bop, calypso, soca, and Latin styles will be studied.  Audition required as well as enrollment in band.  All performances mandatory.

 

Percussion Ensemble                  Grades 9 through 12               374200         1 Credit

     Designed to develop fundamental performance skills incorporating appropriate literature, Techniques and methods used in playing percussion instruments.  Audition and enrollment in Band required.  All performances mandatory.

 

Music Theory      Grades 10 through 12             375600                  1 Credit

     Students will learn fundamental terminology and notation concepts, as well as to recognize compositional processes used in rearranging and composing.  Previous vocal and/or instrumental experience and a strong background in music reading are highly recommended.

 

Music Technology        Grades 10 through 12   1 Credit    

     A computer based study of elementary form and traditional approaches to musical composition.  Emphasis will be on using music notation software and electronic instruments to create new works.  Students will become familiar with the fundamentals of MIDI (Musical Instruments Digital Interface) as it applies to music composition.  Each student will develop a semester project to be presented at the end of the term.
 
THEATER

This course is designed to develop an awareness and appreciation of drama by studying the various elements of the theater, such as acting, make-up, set design, costuming, lighting, etc.   Participation in activities both in and out of the classroom is required.
 
DANCE
 
Dance      Grades 9 through 12    340100      1 Credit
Dance is a means of communication and self-expression different from the written language or spoken word, or from visual and auditory symbol systems.   Students will experience the basics of movement, communication, and stage presence.  Participation in activities both in and out of the classroom is required.
