The two-year Pre-Cosmetology program will provide students with a strong foundation in the science and art of cosmetology through classroom instruction and extensive hands-on training in a modern salon environment. Students will learn hair care, hair cutting, styling, chemical services, shampooing, scalp treatments, sanitation, infection control, customer service, communication, and professional ethics while developing the technical and employability skills needed to succeed in the beauty industry.
One of the most exciting features of the program is that students will have the opportunity to earn up to 1,000 instructional hours toward a West Virginia Hair Styling license while still in high school. Upon successful completion of the two-year program and the required 1,000 instructional hours, students will be eligible to take the West Virginia Hair Stylist licensure examination. By earning these hours before graduation, students will have a significant head start toward becoming licensed professionals, saving both time and money as they begin their careers.
For students who wish to continue their education, the Pre-Cosmetology program serves as an outstanding foundation for future opportunities in the beauty industry. Graduates may choose to attend a licensed cosmetology school to complete additional training and pursue a full cosmetology license or specialize in areas such as esthetics, nail technology, advanced hair design, salon management, or business ownership. Whether students choose to enter the workforce immediately as licensed hairstylists or continue their education, WCTEC's Pre-Cosmetology program provides a strong pathway to a successful and rewarding career.
The program will be approved by the West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists, ensuring students receive instruction that meets state educational and industry standards. Students will also participate in West Virginia's Simulated Workplace initiative, allowing them to experience the expectations of a professional salon while building leadership, teamwork, professionalism, and customer service skills.
The two instructors for the program are Ashely Watson and Jane Conley.
The program is a collaborative effort between Wetzel County Schools and Tyler County Schools, providing students from both counties with access to a high-quality cosmetology education close to home. Students will begin the program as juniors and complete a two-year sequence that prepares them for continued cosmetology education, state licensure, and careers in the beauty and wellness industry.
In addition to technical instruction, students will have opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials, participate in SkillsUSA competitions, and gain valuable work-based learning experiences through partnerships with local salons and businesses. These experiences will help students build confidence, develop professional relationships, and prepare for careers as hairstylists, salon managers, entrepreneurs, product educators, and other beauty industry professionals.
