Rural Health Day Coloring Contest Opportunity for Students

To celebrate National Rural Health Day, WVRHA is hosting a Coloring Contest that encourages creativity while promoting awareness of rural health and the importance of our communities. This is a simple, fun way to engage students while highlighting the value of rural health.

🔥 Fire Safety Week at NMS! 🔥 Former NMS students returned to teach our littles all about fire safety! Isaac Voorhis, Jaydin Lynch, and Ethan Lynch. We also had Chad Lynch, Gary Voorhis, and Joe Smith join us for the day. We love seeing our alumni giving back to our school and community—thank you all for helping our students learn how to stay safe! 🦅❤️🚒

🎉👏 Miss Parker’s small group crushed the Distributive Property today! Not only did they master it, but they were begging for tougher numbers— and they absolutely delivered! 💪✏️ Way to go, Eagles—keep challenging yourselves and soaring higher every day! 🦅✨

What a night at the NMS football game against Calhoun! Our Eagles soared to a BIG win on the field, backed by the energy of our amazing fans. 💙💛 This game was extra special as it was our Gold Rush for Childhood Cancer Awareness. 💛 Families, students, and staff showed up in gold to support this important cause. A heartfelt highlight of the night—Molly and Bentley Yow proudly led the Eagles onto the field in honor of Childhood Cancer. 🐾💛 Their presence reminded us all why we come together—not just for football, but for community, love, and hope. We also held a special coin toss by Principal Walton. Our coin was provided by the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Office in honor of Referee Appreciation. A big shout out to all the referees who dedicate their time to our athletes and the game we love! Hoo-ray for hands-on science! 🦉🔬 Ms. McGinnis’ students dove into owl pellet dissections and turned our lab tables into mini research stations. Using tweezers, magnifiers, and bone charts, they identified tiny skulls and skeletal pieces to learn about food chains, predator–prey relationships, and how scientists use evidence to draw conclusions. We love seeing our Eagles so focused, collaborating, and thinking like real biologists. Ask your student what surprises they found inside their pellet!

🌟📚 Our Reading Challenge is Growing! 📚🌟 Pictured with Mrs. Walton are Braille and Alaina — the very first two students to earn their leaves on the Kindergarten/PK Fall Reading Tree! 🍂👏 Each wing at NMS is competing to see who can grow the fullest tree this fall. Students earn a leaf for every 5 books they read, and each leaf also counts as an entry into a drawing for a free book from our Book Vending Machine! 📖✨ In addition, for every book they read, students will also create a bookend to display above their classroom in the hallway — a colorful way to showcase just how much reading is happening in each room! Some hallways are even adding pumpkins and other fun decorations for students who go above and beyond! 🎃 The first wing to cover their hallway with decorated bookends will win a special surprise! We absolutely love seeing our Eagles so excited about reading — way to go, Braille and Alaina for getting your wing off to a good start! 💙💛

💛 Today, NMS proudly wore gold to support our courageous 5th grader, Harper Goddard, who is battling lymphoma. Not only are we raising awareness for childhood cancer, but we’re also celebrating Harper’s birthday! 🎉🎂 Join us in sending her all the love and strength she deserves!

Friday in Leader in me, the students focused on Habit 6: Synergize. They discussed how drivers in a team help move a project forward, while restrainers keep the team from being effective. Our Leader in Me class worked as a team to build a tower, without restrainers. By working as drivers and keeping an open line of communication, the group was able to build a tall tower of cups. The students work well as a team and enjoyed the experience.

Miss Amber's Pre-K class has been watching the life cycle of monarchs in their classroom.  They have watched tiny caterpillars grow big and form chrysalises, and now they're getting to watch the wonder of butterflies emerging! They've released a few fluttering friends and are waiting for more to emerge and head for Mexico!

NMS welcomes NM Fire Department, October 7th-9th for fire safety week

West Virginia State Legislation passed House Bill 4402 and the West Virginia Board of Education passed WVBE Policy 4373 Expected Behaviors in Safe and Supportive Schools. Both the bill and policy state “Beginning July 1, 2019, all children in grades K-12 shall receive body age-appropriate safety information at least once per academic year, with a preference of four times per year, addressing education and prevention of sexual abuse in children.” This is known as Erin’s Law.


We have invited professionals employed with The Lighthouse Child Advocacy Center to come talk to our students on Monday, September 15, 2025.
