📊 RAND Report Update
The RAND Corporation presented findings on West Virginia’s school funding formula and how it could be modernized to better support high-need students.
WV ranks:
• 5th in students with disabilities
• 8th in families living in poverty
• 48th in NAEP achievement
The report recommends moving to a student-weighted funding model and increasing state aid so districts serving high-need students receive appropriate support. It also notes the HOPE Scholarship could exceed $100 million annually without eligibility changes.
Key Takeaway:
Enrollment is declining due to population trends and the HOPE Scholarship. Wetzel County Schools will continue adjusting while supporting updates to the funding formula that better serve our students.

Superintendent Porter had a wonderful time visiting Short Line School today, where she was invited to read to our amazing first grade students!
There is nothing better than seeing young minds engaged in a good book. Reading is so important and it sparks imagination, builds confidence, and opens the door to endless possibilities. ❤️🖤

Today we proudly celebrate National School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Day, established by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) in 2022 to honor the incredible law enforcement officers who serve in our schools.
Our SROs do so much more than protect our buildings — they serve as mentors, educators, counselors, and trusted role models for our students each and every day. Their dedication helps foster positive relationships and creates a safe, supportive learning environment across our county.
We would like to recognize and thank:
👮♂️ Deputy Elliott – New Martinsville School
👮♂️ Deputy White – Paden City Elementary & WCTEC
👮♂️ Deputy Jackson – Hundred Heritage & Short Line School
👮♂️ Deputy Howell – Valley High School
👮♂️ Deputy Smith – Magnolia High School
Thank you for all you do to keep our students and staff safe. Your commitment, presence, and care do not go unnoticed. We appreciate you today and every day! 💙

Students at Hundred Heritage Elementary School and New Martinsville School put their creativity to work by making special thank you cards for their bus drivers! 🚌❤️
Our bus drivers are often the first smiling face students see in the morning and the last one they see in the afternoon. These handmade cards are a small way to show BIG appreciation for the care, patience, and dedication they show every single day.
Thank you to all of our amazing drivers for keeping our students safe! 💛 #LoveTheBus #WetzelProud

Mrs. McClain has been a school counselor at Magnolia High Schools for 16 years. Her first two years she spilt her time between New Martinsville School and Magnolia. Prior to being a counselor, she worked as a teacher for other counties in WV and in North Carolina. Her favorite part of the job is supporting students each day and watching them grow into successful graduates. 💙💛

This message is to inform you that a mock active shooter drill will be conducted at Hundred Heritage School on the morning of Friday, March 13. Students will not be in school on this date. Hundred Heritage School property, inside and outside, will not be available for use during this time. There will be a large amount of law enforcement and other first responders in the vicinity of Hundred Heritage School, and Route 250 and Route 69 will also be affected in this area. This message will be shared in various forms multiple times over the next few weeks. Thank you for your understanding as we strive to keep our students, staff, and community safe. Again, THIS IS ONLY A DRILL.
Youth & Government Day at the Capitol! ✨🏛️
Our amazing 8th grade Youth and Government students from New Martinsville School, Shortline, and Hundred Heritage had the incredible opportunity to visit the State Capitol in Charleston!
Students spent the day learning firsthand about how government works and what it means to be engaged citizens. They were also able to meet with Delegate Bell and Delegate Sheedy, making the experience even more meaningful and memorable.
We are so proud of these students for representing their schools and Wetzel County so well! 👏🇺🇸
