Mr. Jackson, United States Army National Guard helicopter pilot, shared his flight expertise with our 3rd grade PLTW Launch students today. He found it impressive that our students understood balance and unbalanced, the four forces, Newton’s Laws of Gravity, and the terms fuselage, stabilizer, and wings. In this flight unit, students design, build, and test an experimental model glider to determine how air and other forces affect its flight. Students apply the design process as they problem solve how to deliver aid to a remote area only accessible by aircraft.

As part of our animal studies unit, Ms. Mace’s 4th grade continued the tradition of raising monarch butterflies. From egg to caterpillar, chrysalis to butterfly, they have witnessed the full metamorphosis right before their eyes! They have released two so far this year, with many more to come, so stay tuned!🦋

First grade students at Paden City Elementary are studying the Sun, Moon, and the stars as part of their Project Lead the Way Launch class. They constructed paper sundials and placed them outdoors for observation. During the school day, students marked the location of the changing shadows. They learned that early morning fog and clouds blocked the sun from making shadows. Next, students will analyze their data to determine patterns in the Sun’s movement during a day and how daylight changes throughout the year. The ability to recognize patterns is an important scientific skill that researchers use to develop explanations of observations in nature.
